THE LANTERN COMPETITION

ABOUT

The UK Shaolin Temple’s Chinese lantern competition enables Southampton’s primary schools to immerse themselves in real Chinese New Year Festivities. The driving force of this project is to engage children with international arts and culture while encouraging creativity and expression using hands-on, artistic skills. The project is organised by the UK Shaolin Temple in collaboration with Southampton City Council, the NST, the Confucius Institute and the John Hansard Gallery.

The project will select 8-10 participating schools and task them to create an original Chinese paper lantern and submit it for judging by showcasing them in a 5 minute presentation. All lanterns will be displayed as part of Southampton’s Chinese New Year celebrations. The lantern presentation and judging ceremony will be held in the NST – Southampton on 10th January 2020 from 10:00am -12:00pm. A panel of judges made up of local community artists, and renowned UK and Chinese representatives will choose a winning lantern, and celebrate the talent and effort of all the children who take part.

AIMS

The competition’s aims are to: promote arts and culture, celebrate cultural diversity, and to encourage creative expression within Southampton’s local schools.
